FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin placed 75 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll, which was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
SFA was one of 11 schools to place at least 75 athletes on the list in what proved to be a record-breaking semester for the conference once again as 979 qualified for the honor. That number marked the second consecutive spring semester in which the league set a new record after 953 made the list in 2011.
The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA for the semester in which the student-athlete's championship is held. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
SFA finished with nine on the list with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester, while the women's track and field team once again paced the school with 21 members of the list. The Lumberjack baseball team was next with 14, followed by the men's track and field team with 13.
Randi Plentl, who won the steeplechase at the SLC Outdoor Championships, was one of three Ladyjack harriers with a perfect 4.00 GPA for the semester, doing so in biology. Meanwhile, Jarid Scarafiotti, a first-team academic all-SLC selection and third team all-SLC catcher, highlighted the baseball group for the third straight season with a 4.00 GPA in mathematics.
Also included were three members of the men's basketball team, two from women's basketball, 10 from softball, two from men's golf, three from women's golf and six from women's tennis.
