Ladyjacks Drop Home Opener
SFA loses despite 20-kill effort from Angie Wood
NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team lost its Southland Conference opener Tuesday night to Sam Houston State, 3-2 (28-30, 32-30, 30-17, 30-20, 15-10). The Ladyjacks are now 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the SLC.
The Ladyjacks grabbed the early 1-0 lead behind senior Angie Wood's (Houston, Texas) 20 kills, five digs and four service aces. But the Bearkats fought right back to win game two. SFA appeared to have complete control of the match, storming to a 30-17 victory in game three. Senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) helped the Ladyjacks gain momentum with her 16-kill, 15-dig and eight-block performance. But missed opportunities finally did the Ladyjacks in as they recorded seven service errors and six reception errors while only hitting .066 for the match.
Sam Houston State was led by Carrie Sartain's 21-kill and 25-dig performance. The Bearkats Dana Jefferson added 14 kills and eight digs.
"We had the momentum in game number three," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "All we had to do was go out in game four and finish it and we didn't do it. Sam Houston State got the momentum in game four and carried it over into the fifth game. Anything can happen in game five. We had too many opportunities tonight that we let slip away."
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday against Northwestern State. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, La.
