Arielle Daron was one of three Ladyjacks in double-figure kills against UNT.
Sept. 22, 2009
DENTON, Texas - The Ladyjacks held North Texas to just .117 hitting on the night, but only managed to hit .145 itself and had its comeback effort fall short as the Mean Green snapped an eight-match losing streak, 3-2 (18-25, 29-27, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11) to SFA Tuesday night before a packed house at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
It was the first win for the Mean Green (4-10) over SFA (11-6) since UNT knocked off SFA in the 1995 Southland Conference Tournament title match in Shelton Gym in the Mean Green's final year in the SLC. The loss for SFA also snaps a season-best six-match win streak dating back to Sept. 12 in Tulsa.
SFA held the advantage in hitting percentage, kills (62-49), and assists (59-47). But errors were the Ladyjacks undoing, committing 50 errors total between swings, blocks and serves.
MC Bottles led the way with 16 kills and three blocks, Ashley Bailey added 15 kills and seven blocks from the middle; however, no outside hitter for the Ladyjacks managed more than seven kills, while the Mean Green got plenty of offense out of outside hitters Amy Huddleston and Brittany Youman, getting 12 and 13 kills, respectively, and paced UNT in the final set as well.
It looked as though things would go quickly after SFA cruised to a 25-18 first set win behind five kills from Daron and seven from Bailey, and then held a commanding 21-16 lead before UNT stormed back to take the second set 29-27 in extra points.
The Mean Green then took advantage of 13errors by SFA in the third set to get to the verge of the win at 2-1. But SFA wasn't ready to be done and took advantage of UNT miscues in the fourth set, getting four kills from Kelsey Owens and watching the Mean Green swing just -.049 to push the match to a fifth set for the first time in the series since 1997.
In the fifth set North Texas jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but was forced into three straight errors as SFA took a 6-5 lead nearing the midway point of the final frame. Roxana Casvean then landed consecutive kills to put UNT back on top and the Ladyjacks committed four attack errors on the final six Mean Green points to give UNT the win.
SFA now jumps into conference play on Saturday against Northwestern State at 2:00 p.m. at home, followed by a 7:00 p.m. match against Central Arkansas on Monday from Johnson Coliseum.
