HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Ladyjack volleyball team had the SLC West Division leading Sam Houston Bearkats on the ropes Wednesday night, but could not shut the door as the Kats escaped with a 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 27-25, 15-11) win over SFA at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

SFA (16-10, 5-3 Southland) had a pair of match-point opportunities in the fourth set, but Sam Houston (16-10, 8-1 Southland) was able to fight back behind the two-headed attacking tandem of Anna Ferguson and Carli Kolbe who combined for 52 of the Bearkats 71 kills on the night.

It is the first time that SFA has lost in Huntsville since Sept. 28, 2001 - a span of nine matches, and the first time Sam Houston has won consecutive matches over SFA since picking up a pair of wins 1996 thanks to their win over SFA in the 2008 SLC Tournament.

Kelsey Owens was on point on Wednesday, tying a career highs with 21 kills and seven blocks while only committing three errors on 49 tries. She made it a double-double with 17 digs as well. But SFA was only able to muster .170 hitting as only Arielle Daron was able to jump into double figures with 10 kills.

The Ladyjacks outblocked the Kats 14-12, but behind Kolbe and Ferguson's 26 kills apiece Sam Houston was able to hit .254. Camille Alfaro stepped up with 10 kills, but no other Bearkat had more than Kim Black's five kills.

Paloma Buckner doled out 51 assists, just one shy of a career best, and MC Bottles just missed a career high with seven blocks. Madison Hanlan led the way for SFA with 22 digs as one of five Ladyjacks that had at least 10.

SFA withstood .237 hitting by SHSU in the first set behind six kills from Owens to escape with a two-point win. But Sam Houston knotted it up by holding SFA to jus t.071 hitting in the second set.

The Ladyjacks jumped out in front 15-6 in the third game, but had to withstand a ferocious comeback by the Bearkats as they got to within two points at 23-21 before closing out on a pair of Bearkat errors.

In the fourth the Ladyjacks held the lead for nearly the entire game and even forced the Kats against the wall for a pair of match points despite the Kats hitting .356. It was Owens getting the Ladyjacks to that point, but Ferguson was the one that got the last word with a pair of kills to stretch things to five.

The fifth set was a far cry from Saturday's outcome against UTSA as Sam Houston as the Kats never relinquished the lead and escaped with the win.

SFA stays on the road on Saturday when it faces off against Lamar in Beaumont at 3:00 p.m.
