SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Freshman setter Shannon Connell recorded her third double-double of the season, but the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (27-25, 16-25, 27-25, 23-25, 14-16) heartbreaker in the program's first-ever meeting with Incarnate Word Thursday night inside McDermott Center.
SFA (13-13, 5-8 SLC) fell back to .500 on the season in the five-set loss to the Cardinals (11-10, 6-6 SLC).
Connell recorded 19 assists and 11 digs, while rotating with fellow setter Paige Holland. Both setters appeared in all five sets. Holland finished with 33 assists and seven digs in the loss.
Four different Ladyjacks finished in double-figure kills, led by sophomore Jacque Allen with 14. Allen was joined by Tori Bates (13), Justice Walker (11) and Jill Ivy (10). SFA was held to a .123 attack percentage.
The Ladyjacks hit a match-high .316 clip and got four kills each from Allen and Walker in a 27-25 opening set victory. The set drew even at 11 different points, with the last coming at 25-25, before SFA capitalized on a UIW attack error and kill from Walker to take a 1-0 lead.
After the Cardinals took the second set 25-16 and evened the match 1-1, the Ladyjacks won in similar fashion to the opening set. Allen once again recorded four kills, as SFA won 27-25.
UIW claimed a close fourth set 25-23 to keep the match alive, before taking a 16-14 edge in the fifth set and deciding set.
The Ladyjacks will next travel to Abilene Christian for another first-ever meeting between a newly added Southland Conference school. SFA will square off with the Wildcats Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2:00 p.m.
