FRISCO, Texas - Senior JJ Jones and sophomore Briana Taylor have been named the Southland Conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. It is the first time either player has received the honor.
Jones finished the week by being named MVP of the Ladyjack Invitational, leading SFA to a 3-0 mark in the tournament, and a 4-0 record on the week, with wins over SMU, Northwestern State, Louisiana-Monroe and Tulsa.
The two-time SLC Setter of the Year posted her second triple-double in five matches in the win over Tulsa - the reigning Conference USA champions - with 13 kills, 30 assists and 12 digs. She also just missed out on a triple-double in only three games against Northwestern State when she put up 29 assists, 10 digs and nine kills in helping SFA to a .342 attack percentage for the match.
Overall, for the week she finished with 117 assists, 43 kills, 37 digs, nine blocks and seven aces in four matches.
Taylor also earned her first SLC Defensive Player of the Week honor after picking up 27 blocks (1.80 bpg) in four matches. She became the first Ladyjack to ever post consecutive matches with double-digit blocks when she had 10 versus SMU on Tuesday, and her net play helped the Ladyjacks hold their opponents to a .102 attack percentage for the week.
She picked up six blocks apiece in wins over Tulsa and Northwestern State, and another five versus Louisiana-Monroe. Overall, Taylor helped SFA outblock its opponents 48-18 in the week's four matches - all wins.
The Ladyjacks will try to lengthen their five-match win streak when they travel to Houston for the Houston Tournament on Friday and Saturday. SFA will square off with the host Cougars on Friday, followed by matches with Wake Forest and Rice on Saturday.
