Dec. 19, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Two Stephen F. Austin volleyball players have been recognized by the Southland Conference for their efforts on the court and in the classroom. Paige Holland and OJ Olson each were named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Team on Thursday, receiving second team honors.
Holland is a junior setter from Brenham majoring in interdisciplinary studies. She currently holds a 3.96 GPA. Olson is a sophomore mathematics major and holds a 3.73 GPA.
The conference recognized 12 student-athletes as members of the first team and six on the second team. The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic administrators from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Holland led the Ladyjacks in assists and averaged 8.06 per set. She had seven matches with 40 or more assists with the team going 5-2 in those matches on the year. Holland opened the season with a double-double against Troy with 59 assists and 10 digs.
Olson was one of the top liberos in the Southland this season averaging 5.12 digs per set. She posted three matches of 30 or more digs, including the No. 18 performance in NCAA history in a 4-set match in a 3-1 loss to Northwestern State with 43.
Eight student-athletes received automatic selection to the all-academic team by meeting one of two standards. If a player was named a member of CoSIDA Academic All-District Team or received first-team all-conference honors, they receive automatic SLC All-Academic First Team status.
