SMYRNA, Tenn. – Stephen F. Austin posted another solid showing over the second day of the Vanderbilt Music City Classic, going 4-2 during the six individual matches. The Ladyjacks sit fifth overall with a 9-3 record over the first two days, averaging 188.7 pins per match.
Sophomore Stephanie Schwartz was the top individual performer for the Ladyjacks on the day, tying for third in the individual standings with a 207.50 average over the six-game set, earning her fourth all-tournament honors of the season. She was the only SFA bowler to compete in all six matches, sitting ahead of fellow sophomore Morgan Reising’s 189.00 average and junior Carly Larson’s 188.20 average.
The Ladyjacks opened up day two of competition drawing Sacred Heart in the opening match and started out on the right foot, defeating the Pioneers 916-875. Schwartz led the way for SFA, bowling a 217, with Reising adding a 200 and junior Paige Kraushaar bowling a 185.
Round two saw SFA go head-to-head with Franklin Pierce and SFA struggled to hit the shots it needed throughout the match falling 993-821. No Ladyjacks surpassed the 200-pin mar as Larson’s 183 was the team-high, followed by a 170 from Reising and a 158 from Schwartz.
SFA and Nebraska then resumed their rivalry in match three and it proved to be one of the most intense competitions of the day, unfortunately favoring the Huskers in the end with a 908-904 victory. Larson had the high game for SFA, bowling a 206, just ahead of freshman Paige Beeney’s 201. But SFA needed five more pins to earn the victory, coming up just short.
After two-straight losses, SFA rebounded with a convincing 1,066-887 win over St. Francis (Pa.) to even its daily record at 2-2. Three Ladyjacks bowled in the 200s, led by a strong 237 from junior Kiara Grant and a 236 from both Schwartz and freshman Dakota Hazlewood.
Match five proved to be another key victory for the Ladyjacks, racing past North Carolina A&T 1,037-921, giving SFA another victory over a nationally-ranked team. Schwartz was the top performer for the Ladyjacks, registering a team-high score of 244, followed by a 215 from Hazlewood and a 210 from Grant, giving SFA back-to-back 1,000-pin matches.
Riding a two-game winning streak, SFA closed out day two on a positive note, outlasting Bethune Cookman 905-892. For the third time on the day, Schwartz was the high bowler for the Ladyjacks with a 214, followed by a 193 from Kraushaar as SFA got the pins it needed to secure the win and finish 4-2 on the day.
Sunday’s final round will get underway at 8:30 a.m. as the Ladyjacks will try to make a run at a third-place showing in middle Tennessee. SFA draws Wisconsin-Whitewater in the opening round of the best-of-seven baker style bracket play. Full results will be posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
