Hunter Key Grabs First in Samford Heptathlon/Pentathlon

Samford Heptathlon/Pentathlon Final Results
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA men’s and women’s multi-teams traveled over to Birmingham, Ala. on Wednesday and Thursday for the Samford Heptathlon and Pentathlon meet. This was Stephen F. Austin's third time to compete at the Crossplex. Last year, then redshirt sophomore Hunter Key took second place for the heptathlon, and then junior Madeline Kaufmann took third.
Now as a redshirt junior, Key claimed his first Heptathlon with 4825 points. The Garrison, Texas native had a terrific two days finishing in the top three for four of the seven events, with second place finishes in the 60 meter sprint and the 60 meter hurdles. Key bested his season record from last year in the long jump by four inches with a 20-08.5 foot jump. He also came within one hundredth of a second from setting a new personal record for his 60 meter hurdles.
After the first day of competition, the Lumberjacks were seeded close with Key in fourth, sophomore Connor Wilbur in fifth, and sophomore Tyji Yulee in sixth. Key went on to add 2,196 points to his score during the second day.
Yulee had a terrific second day moving from sixth into finishing third overall. Yulee’s final score was 4538, a new personal record for the sophomore. The product of Gladewater, Texas blasted several of his indoor records in four different events. He broke his PR’s for the long jump (6.17m /20-03), shot put (10.94m/35-10.75), pole vault (3.75m/12-03.5), and the 60 meter sprint (7.33 seconds).
Sophomore Tanner Parks also broke his heptathlon record with a 4412 score (7th), fueled by a third place individual event finish in the pole vault. Sophomore Bradley Beaty finished ninth with a score of 4311, and Wilbur finished in 10th with a 3946.
For the pentathlon, the women had some tough competition and could not crack any event finish over fifth place. Senior Madeline Kaufmann was the top SFA pentathlon finisher with a 3517 in ninth place. The McAllen, Texas native did break two of her indoor personal records in the shot put (11.07m/36-04) and long jump (5.31m/17-05.25), but could not overcome South Alabama and Mississippi State.
SFA’s other pentathetes were freshman Caitlin Lennon, who finished thirteenth with a 3164, freshman Sammi Jo Brashears (15th/3039), and sophomore Jillian Turner (17th/2971).
The Lumberjacks will be competing again next Saturday, Jan. 27th, at the Houston Invitational and Multi event.
