SMYRNA, Tenn. – Stephen F. Austin raced out to a fast start in the opening round of the 2017 Vanderbilt Columbia 300 Music City Classic Friday, posting a 4-1 mark in baker style matches. The Ladyjacks currently sit 10th among the 35-team field in scoring average, posting a 188.3 mark through the first five matches.
Playing against the deepest field of the season (35 teams), SFA drew LIU-Brooklyn to begin the weekend’s tournament. The Ladyajcks won four of the five games against the Blackbirds, including 226-180 victory in game two and a 200-159 decision in game five, starting out the event with a 949-858 win.
Round two pitted SFA against Sacred Heart and the Ladyjacks prevailed 990-896 in its highest total of the day. SFA eclipsed the 200-pin mark in all three victories over the Pioneers, taking game one 251-147, game three 222-194 and finishing off the win with a 212-206 victory in game five.
The Ladyjacks hit their first stumbling block of the weekend in match three, falling to St. Francis (Pa.) 928-904. After taking the opening game 178-140, the Ladyjacks lost the next three, looking at a 53-pin deficit entering game five. SFA mounted an impressive comeback, defeating the Red Flash 226-197, but the deficit was too great as the Ladyjacks dropped their first match of the weekend.
SFA responded in match four, however, rebounding with a 943-899 victory over Mount Aloysius. The Ladyjacks took four of the five matches, including a 204-171 decision in game two to set the tone.
The final match of the day had SFA matched up with Bethune-Cookman and the Ladyjacks finished their first day in Tennessee on a high note, defeating the Wildcats 921-827. Once again, SFA took four of five matches against BCU, beginning with a 199-156 win in game one and a 235-185 victory in game four to all but clinch the match for the Ladyjacks.
With the 4-1 record on the day, SFA improves its overall season record to 70-39 on the year, marking the fourth-straight years the Ladyjacks have reached 70 wins on the year. SFA continues to remain tough in baker style matches as well, improving to 36-9 in the five-player format on the season.
Day two of the three day event gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning as the 35-team field will compete in five traditional team matches. The results of those matches will determine the seeding for Sunday’s best-of-seven baker-style bracket play finals. Updates throughout the day can be found on Twitter @SFA_Bowling.
