BASTROP, Texas - Stephen F. Austin and the rest of the 12-team field at the Jim West Intercollegiate got about half of Tuesday's final round in before Mother Nature decided she had other plans. Due to rain and lightning, the final round of the Jim West was canceled, giving SFA a seventh-place finish at 4-over 580.
Sophomore Angelo Leyvani officially finishes with a 5-under 139 after posting a 3-under 69 and a 2-under 70 Monday, tying Rice's Mario Carmona for second overall. The duo finished three shots back of New Mexico State's Ryo Harada, who posted an 8-under 136.
Leyvani's 139 shatters his previous 36-hole low of 152 at last season's Border Olympics and gives him the lowest 36-hole tournament score since Mitchell McLeroy's 137 at the 2012 Moe O'Brien Intercollegiate. The sophomore from San Antonio matches his best tournament finish, placing second at last year's Bob Sitton Invitational, while notching the sixth top-10 showing of his Lumberjack career.
Leyvani was joined in the top-20 by senior Major Monzingo, who tied for 17th overall with a 1-over 145. It is the 10th top-20 finish of Monzingo's SFA career, and his seventh in 2016-17, as he continues to lead the Lumberjacks with a 72.82 scoring average - currently the second-lowest in program history.
Senior Cory Brown finished tied for 25th overall with a 3-over 147, two shots better than freshman Zach Sudinsky's 5-over 149, tying for 38th. Junior Blake Stock rounded out the Lumberjack competitors with a 12-over 156.
The canceled final round prohibited SFA from making a run up the team leaderboard as the Lumberjacks notch the seventh-place finish, one shot back of sixth-place Oral Roberts (3-over 579) and two shots back of fifth-place Louisiana-Lafayette (2-over 578). In fact, just six shots separated the top seven teams at Wolfdancer in an extremely competitive field.
Rice officially captured the team title with a 2-under 574, besting second-place Southeastern Louisiana (1-under 575) by a stroke. New Mexico State (Even-par 576) placed third with UT-Arlington (1-over 577) and Lafayette rounding out the top-five.
The seventh-place showing now gives the Lumberjacks eight top-10 team showings in their nine events in 2016-17, including five-straight events during the spring season. With Leyvani tying for second, SFA has now registered 13 individual top-10 finishes, including at least one in each of the last five tournaments as well.
With the Jim West Intercollegiate now in the books, SFA now sets its sights on the 2017 Southland Conference Championships, making a return trip to Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney. The 54-hole event gets underway on Monday, April 24th, leading up to the final round on Wednesday, April 26th.
