Ladyjacks' Senior Day Spoiled by 5-2 Setback to Central Arkansas

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Saturday morning marked the final home appearance of Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis senior Denise Maxl, but she and the Ladyjacks fell 5-2 to visiting Central Arkansas in Southland Conference action Saturday morning.
“We played pretty well, but it was disappointing to see us come up short in Denise’s last home match,” said SFA head coach Jon McLaughlin. “She came out very strong in doubles and won her first set in singles, but credit Central Arkansas. They’re a good team and won the points they needed to in order to walk away with another team win on their record.”
Maxl and Guliarte downed Pornpawee Pramethong and Hee-Jin Oh 6-2 in doubles play, but the Sugar Bears jumped out to a 1-0 after lead after capturing the other two doubles matches by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
One of the two singles wins Saturday belong to Kaja Ljubic. The sophomore bounced back from a 6-3 loss to Rada Manataweewat in the opening set of her sixth-seeded singles bout by winning the next two sets 6-0, 6-3. Ljubic’s victory upped her singles mark to 10-5 in her first season of NCAA Division I competition.
Guilarte captured a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (5-3) win over Oh in the number-two singles flight for SFA’s only other team point of the afternoon. Darinka Tiboldi went toe-to-toe with QiLi Ma in the number-three singles match but SFA’s freshman dropped a close 6-2, 7-6 (5-3) decision to the UCA student-athlete.
In their final match of the 2017 regular season, the Ladyjacks will head to Arlington, Texas, to take on Southland Conference foe Abilene Christian at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
