'Jacks Win SLC Opener 75-64 Over Southwest Texas

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks went to overtime for the second straight game Saturday, beating Southwest Texas 75-64 in the conference opener for both schools. SFA trailed by as many as seven points with just under four minutes remaining and rallied to tie the game at 56-56 with :42 remaining. Neither team could manage a point over the course of the final seconds, forcing the extra period.
Skip Jackson, a junior from Beaumont, hit two straight three pointers to open the overtime period, fueling an 11-0 Lumberjack run from which Southwest Texas could not recover. Jackson finished the night with 21 points connecting on six of 13 from the floor, including two of four from beyond the three point arc. Both of his three's came in overtime.
The 'Jacks shot only 32 percent from the floor in the second half, but came alive in overtime, hitting all four field goal attempts. Overall, SFA finished the night shooting 41 percent (25-61) from the floor, while Southwest Texas connected on 22 of 61 field goal tries (.361).
Jackson led all scorers in the game with his 21 points. Forward Edwin Tatum and forward Percy Green, both Oklahoma City juniors, led all rebounders in the game with 11 boards each. Green finished the night with 18 points to go along with his 11 rebounds. The double-double for Green is his first as a Lumberjack.
SFA moves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in SLC play with the win, while Southwest Texas falls to 2-3, 0-1. The 'Jacks return to non-conference action Tuesday night as they travel to Shreveport to take on Centenary before returning home to host Texas Southern next Saturday. Next Saturday's tip is set for 7:00 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
