HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Dedrick Sanders led a trio of Lumberjacks in double figures with a career high 19 points as the Lumberjacks (17-8, 8-6) claimed sole possession of fourth place in the SLC with a 71-61 win over Sam Houston Saturday night in Huntsville.
SFA led 38-35 at the half and won for the first time on the road since Nov. 29 with the win over Sam Houston. It marks the first time since the 1994-95 season the Lumberjacks have swept the season series over Sam Houston.
Sanders scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half of play and ignited an SFA rally with back-to-back three-pointers midway through the second half of play. Sanders scored eight straight points as the 'Jacks erased a four point Sam Houston lead and built a four point lead of their own behind Sanders' outbreak. Sam Houston battled back and regained the lead at 55-54 with 4:56 to play before Hank Rivers scored following an offensive rebound to give SFA the lead for good. Antonio Burks nailed a three-pointer moments later to give the 'Jacks a four point cushion and Sam Houston never narrowed the gap.
Rivers ended the night with 15 points, tying a career high, and Antonio Burks also finished with 15 for the 'Jacks. Rivers led the 'Jacks on the boards with eight rebounds, six of which were offensive boards. SFA outscored Sam Houston 18-8 on second chance points and outrebounded the Bearkats 38-35 for the game.
SFA was charged with eight turnovers on the night while forcing 14 Sam Houston miscues. SFA outscored the Bearkats 22-6 on points off turnovers.
