LAREDO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin recorded a 14th-place finish at the weather-shortened Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club. The Lumberjacks finished the 36-hole event with an 8-over 584, highlighted by a 3-over 288 in round one.
SFA and the rest of the 18-team field battled the heavy rains that fell across the eastern part of Texas for the majority of the week as play was suspended just past the midway point of round one Friday. The decision was made to reduce the tournament to 36 holes, finishing round one and then playing round two Saturday.
The ‘Jacks found themselves tied for seventh after round one, shooting a 3-over 291. SFA added two strokes to their total, firing a 5-over 293 in round two, but that was enough to drop the Lumberjacks seven spots as SFA finished 14th among the 18-team field.
SFA once again was led by senior Luke Sheehan, who tied for 19th with a 2-under 142. Sheehan posted a 3-under 69 in round one, followed by a 1-over 73 in round two to record the 20th top-20 finish of his Lumberjack career. With his 3-under 69 in round one, Sheehan upped his career par-or-better total to 33 rounds, moving into sole possession of fourth place in program history.
Junior Nick Maynard finished second among the SFA competitors in his second tournament of the season, finishing tied for 48th overall with a 2-over 146, including an even-par 72 in round two. He finished two shots better than fellow junior Baxter Ward’s 4-over 148, posting a 1-over 73 in round two and finishing tied for fifth among all competitors with 28 pars over the 36 holes.
The freshman duo of Jacob Hendrix and Angelo Leyvani rounded out the Lumberjack scorecard, shooting a 7-over 151 and an 8-over 152, respectively. Leyvani made his mark the par-threes, tying for the tournament lead by shooting 2-under for the tournament, while Hendrix posted a 1-over 73 in his first collegiate round.
SFA finished three strokes back of 13th-place New Mexico (5-over 581) and was four shots back of both UTEP and Louisiana-Monroe (4-over 580), tying for 11th. Five shots proved to be the difference between the Lumberjacks and a top-10 showing as the ‘Jacks finished that many back of 10th-place Notre Dame (3-over 579).
Baylor captured the team title with an impressive 20-under 556, defeating host and runner-up Houston (12-under 564) by eight shots. Rice (9-under 567) finished third with rival Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Lafayette (7-under 569) tying for fourth. Fellow Southland Conference foe McNeese State also finished under par (4-under 572) as did Sacramento State (2-under 574).
The Lumberjacks now head to the DFW Metroplex, teaming up with Oral Roberts to co-host the 2016 TPC Four Seasons Spring Break Invitational at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas. The three-day event will be held March 15-17 with 18 holes being played each day.
