NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin splits the double-header with Lamar, losing game one 3-2 and winning game two 6-4. The Lumberjacks move to 6-7 and the Cardinals move to 3-10.
Game 1
Lumberjack's starter, Alexis Telford, found herself in another pitching duel this afternoon in the first game of the double-header, but Lamar drew first blood in the top of the third inning when they scored two runs on a RBI double. The 'Jacks fought back in the bottom of the fourth when Sydnee Hebert drove in the first SFA run with a bases-loaded walk. A couple of batters later, Emily Land came in clutch as a pinch hitter and tied the game with a RBI infield single. After four innings, the score was tied at 2-2.
The game went into the seventh inning looking like the 'Jacks were going to go 3-for-3 in games with extra innings in front of the home crowd this season. The 'Jacks got an early two outs in the top of the seventh but after three straight singles, the Cardinals scored one run and went to the bottom half of the inning looking to close out the game. Unfortunately for the 'Jacks, that's exactly what they did, getting three outs on three batters and winning game one 3-2.
Camryn Middlebrook went 2-for-4 in game one with one run scored. Mackenzie Bennett, Mikaelah Burkland, Mallory Webb, and Land all recorded a base hit in the first game of the afternoon. Telford went 6.2 innings in the circle, gave up three earned runs, and struck out six.
Game 2
Lamar got the early lead in game two by recording one run off a RBI double in the top of the first inning. After a quick inning and a half of play, the Cardinals continued to put runs on the board. A leadoff walk was the start of an adverse top half of the inning for the 'Jacks, as the following batter laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over. But the throw to first flew over Bennett's head and rolled all the way to the outfield, allowing the runner to score. The Cardinal that laid down the bunt then scored from third after a pop-up in foul territory was far enough for her to tag up and score, giving Lamar the 3-0 lead.
The SFA bats finally came to life in the bottom of the third, starting with an Arwin Callaway walk and an Emily Berryhill double to left center. Madison Nguyen drove in the first run of the game beating out an infield single. Middlebrook followed with another RBI single of her own, and Land gave the 'Jacks the lead with a two-run double down the left field line.
Following an error by the 'Jacks in the top of the fourth, the Cardinals tied the game back up at four a piece. But in the bottom of the fourth, Nguyen came in clutch once again and gave the 'Jacks the 6-4 lead with another two-run double.
Brooke Gainous pitched an impressive final three innings of the game, and held Lamar from scoring the rest of the game to give SFA the 6-4 win.
Nguyen and Burkland both picked up two hits in game two, while Land joined Nguyen in being the two players that drove in all of the SFA runs.
SFA softball will travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana to take on McNeese and Ole Miss in a weekend tournament. Their first game will be on Friday, February 24th at 6:00 p.m. against McNeese State University.
