
Lumberjacks Face Colonels for Season Closer

RICHMOND, Kentucky- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (3-7, 0-5) travel to Richmond, Kentucky to face the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (4-6, 3-2) in the final game of the 2023 season for both teams. Saturday's game at Roy Kidd Stadium will be the last regular season game of the inaugural United Athletic Conference season.
Matchup History
Saturday's matchup will be the third meeting between the two programs. The all-time series is currently led by the Lumberjacks, 2-0. The last meeting between the two teams was November 6, 2021, In Nacogdoches at Homer Bryce Stadium where the Lumberjacks won by a score of 31-17 over the Colonels.
A Look at SFA
The Lumberjacks offense struggled to get anything going against the Thunderbirds defense in last Saturday's loss. Brian Maurer got the start at quarterback completing seven passes for 116 total yards. Senior quarterback Preston Weeks then came in the third quarter and led the way for the Lumberjacks through the air completing 12 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. The Thunderbird's run defense was also able to hold the 'Jacks rushing game to 22 yards rushing and no touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Josh Thompson led the way for the receiving corps with 67 yards on two catches. Senior Cameron Dotson also caught his first collegiate touchdown in the game.
The Lumberjack defense struggled to contain the Thunderbirds' rushing attack as they allowed 258 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the game. Thunderbirds' quarterback Justin Miller threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Isaiah Wooden also had a good game catching five passes for 123 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the defensive struggles the Lumberjacks defense was able to total six tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, and five quarterback hurries. Jermaine Brown had another standout game with 14 total tackles to bring his season total to a team leading 77 total tackles. Senior defensive lineman Amad Murray had a massive game totaling eight tackles, two tackles for loss, one and a half sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery which was his third recovery on the season.
A Look at Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels are coming off a loss to Central Arkansas in last weeks matchup. Quarterback Parker McKinney threw for 38 completions for 377 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions against a stout Central Arkansas pass defense. The Colonels' rushing attack was held to just 60 yards and no touchdowns. Wide receiver Sloan Braedon led the way for the receiving corps with seven receptions for 109 yards.
The defense was able to hold the Bears to 21 points through three quarters of play losing on a walk-off hailmary as time expired to put the Bears on top. The defense was led by Franky West with 10 total tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery. The defense totaled seven tackles for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble, one interception, and four quarterback hurries in the loss.
