NACOGDOCHES, Texas. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (6-6, 0-2) defeated the Texas Wesleyan University Rams (8-5, 4-4) 82-56 at the Sawmill on Friday evening thanks to a balanced scoring effort that saw five different Lumberjacks finish with double-digit points.
The Lumberjacks came out of the gates firing in their first home game in almost a month as Nana Antwi-Boasiako would drain a three-pointer on SFA's opening possession to kick start an 11-0 scoring run by SFA to open the contest.
At the halfway point of the first half, Keon Thompson would make his presence felt in this one as he rattled off eight straight points for SFA to help offset eight points from the Rams and keep SFA in the lead 19-8 at the halfway point of the first half.
SFA would keep the points coming in the first half as Thierno Sylla, Keon Thompson, Matt Hayman, and Nana Antwi-Boasiako would combine to score 15 points for SFA over the final five minutes of the first half, however, the Rams scored the final five points of the half, which sent SFA into the locker rooms with a 34-24 lead at halftime.
The 'Jacks came out of the half with similar energy as they began the half with a Chrishawn Christmas and Matt Hayman consecutive baskets for SFA to put them ahead 39-24 early in the second half. The first five minutes of the second half offered an intense defensive battle as the two teams combined for only nine more points, with SFA holding a 44-29 lead five minutes into the half.
At the 12-minute mark of the second half, the Lumberjacks would start to extend their lead as four straight free-throws from SFA helped start a 9-2 scoring run that was capped off with a Dominic Pangonis triple and a Chrishawn Christmas jumper to put SFA ahead 53-31 at the halfway point of the second half.
Shortly after the halfway point, Clayton Southwick and Thierno Sylla would convert consecutive three-pointers for SFA to push them ahead 60-35, which was extended to a 66-43 lead with five minutes remaining in the game.
Thierno Sylla would record four straight points for SFA to push them ahead at 70-45, before Keon Thompson and Dominic Pangonis teamed up for seven straight SFA points to make the score 77-49 in favor of the 'Jacks. Sylla would put the exclamation point on his day with another four straight points to put SFA over the 80-point threshold at 81-49, which SFA would not relinquish in an eventual 82-56 defeat of the Texas Wesleyan Rams.
